Why is it necessary to “Save the Algoma Catwalk”?
The US Army Corps of Engineers began reconstruction of the north pier in May 2026. Reconstruction requires removal of the Algoma Pierhead Lighthouse and the steel catwalk located on the pier. The lighthouse will be returned when reconstruction is complete, but there are no plans to restore the catwalk. If we do not raise the funds to restore the catwalk, this iconic part of our beautiful harbor will be lost.
Why should I care about saving the harbor catwalk?
The catwalk is the foundational cornerstone of Algoma’s unique identity, historical prestige, and appeal to tourists. Whether you were born in Algoma, just moved here, or are passing through, preserving the catwalk directly impacts your experience and investment in our community. It is one of only two remaining pierhead catwalks in Wisconsin on Lake Michigan and it transforms Algoma from a run-of-the-mill coastal town into a rare, historically significant destination. A premier, visually striking waterfront acts as an anchor for the local economy, elevating the desirability of the entire area and encouraging growth of the tax base. The iconic silhouette of the catwalk defines Algoma’s visual brand and preserving it ensures our downtown and harbor remain vibrant, attractive, and distinct.
What will happen to the lighthouse during reconstruction?
It is the responsibility of the US Army Corps of Engineers and Roen Salvage Company, who was awarded the contract, to safeguard the lighthouse during reconstruction. It has been determined that the safest option is to move it offsite. The lighthouse will be moved by barge to Roen’s yard in Sturgeon Bay where it will be stored for the duration of the project.
How will we “Save the Algoma Catwalk”?
We have collaborated with Roen Construction to preserve as much of the catwalk’s steel as possible as it is removed from the pier. We are also working with Olson Fabrication of Algoma to store and assess reuse of the steel bents that make up the catwalk. We will then assess what can be reused and make plans to refabricate what cannot. When reconstruction is complete, we will arrange to reinstall the catwalk, which has already been approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This plan is contingent on our ability to raise the funds necessary to restore and reinstall the catwalk.
How much will it cost to replace the catwalk?
The cost will depend on how much of the existing catwalk can be preserved and other factors. This will not be fully known until all the steel bents have been removed and assessed. We are currently targeting to raise $500,000 to cover storage, professional fees, potential fabricator fees, and replacement. If we find that we can reuse much of the steel, we may be able to complete the project for less.
How will we raise these funds?
Funds will be raised through:
(a) personal donations
(b) business partnerships
(c) community fundraising events
(d) applications to public and private grants
Neither the City of Algoma nor the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing funding for this effort.
What if we collect more than we need?
If the final cost of replacing the catwalk is less than we collect, excess funds will be used to set up a fund to support historic preservation in the City of Algoma and/or on-going maintenance of the catwalk. This fund will be independently managed by Community Improvement of Algoma, a 501(c)3 organization, and funds will be made available for grants upon request.
What if we do not collect enough funds to restore the Catwalk?
The reconstruction of the north pier is expected to take as long as two years, which provides plenty of time to raise the funds necessary. We will require working capital along the way. Our plan is to see this effort through to restoration of the catwalk no matter how long it takes.
However, should a decision be made to no longer pursue restoration of the catwalk, donors will be given an option to receive a prorated refund of their donation based on the amount of working capital already spent. A sincere attempt will be made to contact donors with the information provided at the time of the donation. A full accounting of how funds were spent will be provided. Funds from anonymous donations and any funds remaining after fulfilling refund requests would be used to set up a fund to support ongoing historic preservation in the City of Algoma, managed by Community Improvement of Algoma.

The Save the Algoma Catwalk committee is an ad hoc committee of Community Improvement of Algoma, a 501c3 organization, and contributions are tax deductible.

What can I do to get involved?
We meet at the Algoma Boat Club monthly, and all interested parties are welcome to attend.
